As a young cub born and raised in SoHo in the heart of downtown Manhattan, The Bear was constantly exposed to new sounds from early on: Papa Bear’s Miles and Coltrane records, Mama’s Bear’s Mozart and Bach, and the Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul and other golden-age hip-hop tapes blasting from Sister Bear’s boombox. “I remember listening to my Dad’s record collection and finding the Tribe bassline from [Freddy Hubbard's] Red Clay,” the Bear recalls. “From that point on I knew I wanted to DJ.” All this along with coming up in NYC’s vast world of music and entertainment, it’s no wonder DJ Russian Bear’s style is so universal.
From mining mixtapes in his bedroom at 14, to sharing stages with hip-hop legends Ghostface Killah (Wu-Tang Clan), The Beatnuts, Akynele and Aesop Rock by 21, The Bear has continued to rise while elevating his craft to an artform.
Today, Russian Bear finds himself on a bi-coastal and international stage, DJ’ing events for major fashion houses and media outlets from New York to L.A.
